Chrome is a material that is appearing more commonly in the domestic home. It is an alloy metal usually fused with other metals to create an element that is corrosion and hardness free and that is more resistant. It is usually coated over alternative metals as it gives an aesthetically pleasing overlay. It can be polished highly and compliments the 70s mid century feel. I think using it on lighting and perhaps a tinted mirror gives it a cool, masculine feel. Having a wire frame and being used in the kitchen works well, I think it gives it a rustic edge. It was the 1850’s that it was first discovered.

I have looked at a few designs that harmonise with or contain chrome.

First up is the Multi Lite Pendant. It is a staple in Danish design which is extremely innovative. The shape of it is incredibly timeless. It is flexible in its applications and the movement in the lamp creates different atmospheres relative to the angle it sits in the room. It was designed by Louis Weisdorf in 1972 and I find that if something designed in the 20th century still looks modern, the designer is almost better than the design itself.

Another example of Chrome is the DKR Wire Chair, designed in 1951 by Charles and Ray Eames. The intricate frame reflects the light beautifully. The chair is completely welded steel wire and padded seating can be attached for some comfort.

Tom Dixon's Bell lamp is highly polished and relatively small, it is a subtle statement. Finally, the unique Flos IC T2 lamp. This range is table, floor and wall lamp which was designed by Michael Anastassiades. It is composed of a glass diffused ball on a brushed gold frame. I really love Flos' IC range, it is so elegant.
